Internet Phone
The Rising Popularity Of Internt Phone (VoIP)
The use of the internet for normal telephone calls and conversations is, in short, called the internet phone. It is also called VoIP (Voice over Internet protocol) phone, or Voice over IP phone. It is a software program which allows the usual telephone conversations through the computer. One of the biggest advantages of this new technology is that it cuts down expenses of long-distance calls.
The technology of telephony is changing fast. From actually dialing numbers to the push button phones to wireless phones - the transition has been faster that we could imagine. Just when people had started taking their cordless phones to the garden glued in endless conversation, there was the onslaught of mobile phones. Now connectivity comes in the shape of smart, sleek looking mobiles which do much more than making and taking calls and messages. It has now turned into a virtual mobile office-cum-entertainment zone. Before the world even got used to mobiles, has entered what is known as the over Internet Protocol (VoIP) - Internet phone service, which is changing the way the world remains connected.
Through this technology, sound signals do not cross the massive public networks, instead the voice signals are transmitted over the broadband connection of your computer. The first point of saving which this technology brings forth is that, with the payment of a minimal monthly charge, you could reap double benefits from your computer - that of using it for internet as well as use it as your internet phone.
To make a call using the internet phone technology, you could use an Analog Telephone Adapter, or the ATA. This is a simple device, which needs to be plugged to your existing phone and then connect it to the broadband modem of your computer. The adapter changes analog to digital signals using the internet. Then there are IP phones also available these days. These phones have the necessary software and hardware built-in for internet phone service to operate. The IP phone needs to be connected to the modem and you could start enjoying your internet phone calls instantly. You could also make calls from computer to computer. In this case you would need high-speed internet connectivity, sound cards, microphones and of course speakers. Fees for this type of service are usually paid monthly to the internet service provider.
With the VoIP software that is available these days, internet phone calls are very easy to make and receive, thus, totally doing away with your phone service provider and saving enormous amounts in your telephone bills.
